This session will be an opportunity for conference presenters and participants from Southern and Eastern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) to discuss the realities faced by transgender and gender-non-conforming people in that region -- including on-going challenges, current opportunities, and strategies for success. All are welcome to join in the conversation about solidarity and coalition.

I am the director of a trans organization called Trans Bantu Zambia, I have been actively involved in the LGBT movement in zambia for the past 5 years. I am currently researching on Patriarchy vs feminism from a trans perspective. I am also a creative writer.

As programmes officer at Trans Bantu Zambia, my work includes addressing the many challenges of patriarchal attitudes, finding a gap in culture to instill in our members feminist values without losing ones identity. My work deals mainly with understanding why privilege is abused by Trans men and why the resistance to feminist principles.

Liesl Theron
Liesl Theron co-founded Gender DynamiX (GDX) in 2005, a human rights organisation promoting freedom of expression of gender identity, focussing on transgender, transsexual and gender non-conforming persons. Liesl is one of the three co-founders of Transitioning Africa, a newly formed coalition between GDX, SIPD – Uganda and Transgender and Intersex Africa (TIA). Being a gender activist she is actively involved in the organised LGBTI sector of South Africa. Her work focuses on the intersectionality of gender and Other bodies. Her research as part of her Masters degree at the University of Cape Town explores the struggles, support and forming of identity of SOFFA’s (Significant Others, Family, Friends and Allies) of trans people. Gender DynamiX published its first book, an anthology. TRANS: Transgender Life Stories from South Africa. Liesl was throughout the process from interviewing, conceptualising to being actively part of the focus group hands-on involved in this book. She contributed a chapter to this book, The SOFFA perspective. She also has chapters published respectively in: Tapestry of Human Sexuality in Africa, titled “Access to shelters for LGT people in Cape Town”, and Reclaiming the L-Word – Sappho’s daughters out in Africa with title name: “Orientation Quiz”.
